An American was aboard the plane that crashed in Pakistan, officials said

A Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) plane crashed on Friday According to Health Minister Azra Fazal, in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi. The airline’s chief executive told a news conference that the flight from Lahore had a total of 99 passengers and crew members. In Karachi on Friday, PIA chief executive Air Vice Marshal Arshad Malik told reporters that the plane did not hit any building and no one appeared to have died on the ground. The plane landed in an alley, he added.

A statement from the Sindh Health Department said at least 76 bodies had been recovered from the rubble.

On Friday afternoon, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also tweeted, “He is shocked and saddened to hear of the plane crash in Karachi today.”

“My prayers are with the dead and injured and their families,” he wrote. “The United States stands with Pakistan in this difficult time.”
